5 Tips for Preparing for Your Newborn Session
When it comes to taking newborn photographs, preparation is key. Whether you’re a parent or a professional photographer, having a few newborn session prep tips handy can make all the difference in capturing those special first few weeks of your baby’s life.
1. Schedule Your Session Early
When it comes to newborn photography, it’s best to book your session as soon as possible. Most photographers book a limited number of sessions per month & their calendars do fill up. If you love a photographer’s work – reserve your spot on their calendar early! 2nd trimester is a great time to book your newborn photographer.
2. Take feeding breaks as needed
For newborn sessions, it’s best listen to your baby’s hunger cues. A full tummy makes a happy & relaxed baby. Often times babies are on a feeding schedule of about 2-3 hours. But it’s not uncommon for their to be days when your little one is experiencing cluster feeding – if this happens on photo session day, don’t fight it – just go with it. Your photographer would much rather take a break from photos to let you feed your baby, than to keep working with a hungry babe 😉
3. Have All the Necessary Props Ready
To help make your newborn’s session go smoothly, make sure to have all the necessary props ready. This includes blankets, hats, wraps, and any other items that you plan on using. If you’re taking photos at home, make sure you have a comfortable spot for your baby to lay.
4. Clean & groom your nails
Your fingernails will show up a good bit during a newborn session, make sure your nails are clean & up to your standards 😉
5. Dress Comfortably
When it comes to newborn sessions, comfort is key. Choose comfortable clothing for your baby, such as a onesie or sleep sack. And make sure you wear something that you feel comfortable in, too.
For my clients, I keep lots of swaddling blankets on hand in my studio as a swaddled baby is such a classic & timeless look (and most babies love to be swaddled)!
By following these newborn session prep tips, you can make sure that your baby’s session goes as smoothly as possible. And don’t forget to book your session early to ensure you get the best results. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
