If you’ve ever added a puppy to your family, you know one thing for sure: timelines are… flexible. That’s exactly why this new puppy photo session worked so well — and why it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to document this season.
When this longtime client texted me to say they were getting a puppy (but didn’t know when they’d actually have him), my answer was easy: No worries at all.
Instead of stressing over dates, we treated it just like a newborn session.
Here’s how we made it simple:
We picked an estimated “gotcha” date and held space on my calendar. Once the puppy was officially home and settled in, we chose the exact session date together.
This approach gives new pet parents breathing room — no rushing, no pressure, and no scrambling to fit photos in during an already exciting (and slightly chaotic) time.
If you’re planning a new puppy photo session, flexibility is key. Puppies grow fast, change daily, and need time to adjust — and your photo experience should reflect that.
Treating Puppy Photos Like a Newborn Session
Just like newborn photography, puppy sessions work best when we:
There’s no expectation for “posed” moments. Instead, we let your puppy explore, cuddle, nap, or bounce around — all of it tells the story of this season.
Some of the sweetest images come from the in-between moments: tiny paws on the floor, curious noses, and that brand-new bond forming between you and your pup.
Puppies don’t stay little for long. One day they’re all ears and clumsy paws, and the next they’re somehow full-grown.
A new puppy photo session isn’t just about cute photos (though there will be plenty of those). It’s about remembering:
These sessions become part of your family’s story — just like maternity, newborn, and milestone photos.
If you’re welcoming a puppy soon and wondering how to plan photos without stress, this flexible approach is the way to go. We’ll hold space on the calendar, wait until your pup is home, and create something meaningful together — no rushing required.
