As a family photographer in Franklin, TN, I’ve learned that sessions with little kids (and pets… and even more pets) are basically the most delightful kind of chaos. And honestly? That’s my favorite part.
For this sweet session, we met at the family’s home — and right away, I knew it was going to be good. Not just because they had a toddler ready to sprint into the day or the dogs who immediately tried to adopt me, or even the chickens who were invited out for a brief cameo…
…but because in their front yard stood the most incredible yellow tree. The kind you don’t plan for, but show up and think, “Ohhhh okay, Mother Nature. I see what you’re doing.” Total magic — without making fall the whole personality of the session.
Toddlers are tiny free spirits with the speed of an Olympian, and this little guy fully lived up to the reputation. Add two excited dogs and some curious chickens waiting for their close-up, and you’ve got a session that basically directs itself.
He ran. He giggled. He tossed leaves, discovered sticks, and made about fourteen attempts to show me something very, very important he found in the yard.
And honestly? Those are the moments that make family photos real, fun, and so worth remembering.
Of course, it wasn’t all toddler sprints and dog cameos. Mom and dad were so sweet and grounded, taking in every moment with their boy.
And when their toddler did what toddlers do (AKA anything except “posing”), they trusted my reassurance that letting him lead would create magic we could never plan for.
Quick cuddles, tiny hugs, snack breaks, a reset here and there — the normal rhythm of life with a little one. And those quieter, unscripted moments ended up being some of the most tender images from the whole session.
We did not plan on that incredible golden tree stealing the show — but it was too good not to use.
It added the perfect burst of color and made their front yard feel almost enchanted. But the best part wasn’t the tree itself… it was watching them interact beneath it: laughing, snuggling, and letting their little boy explore everything with fresh eyes.
Fall was there, sure — but it was never the point.
Their family connection was.
Keep it comfy. Wear what lets you move, snuggle, chase your toddler, or wrangle a dog.
Let the kids lead. Tiny humans have big opinions — and sometimes the best photos come when we follow their energy.
Choose a spot that feels like you. Your backyard, a favorite park, a pretty path — magic happens wherever connection does.
Don’t stress the chaos. Pets, toddlers, energy, unpredictability… it all adds personality and joy to your gallery.
Whether you’ve got one toddler, three dogs, a flock of chickens, or just a whole lot of love — I’d be honored to photograph your crew.
