What to Wear to Your Newborn Session?

Planning for your newborn session and wondering what to wear? You’re in the right place! As a photographer based in Franklin, Tennessee, I’ve helped countless families create beautiful memories with their little ones. Today, let’s talk about the key to dressing for success and capturing those precious early moments with your newest family member.

Comfort is Key

When it comes to newborn sessions, comfort is essential. We want you and your baby to feel relaxed and at ease throughout the session, so choosing soft, cozy fabrics like cotton and linen is a great place to start.
For newly postpartum mamas, loose/flowy dresses are typically the most comfortable.
However, if you aren’t a “dress person” – flowy linen pants or leggings paired with a simple shirt, a chambray or white button-up, or a soft cozy textured cardigan or sweater – also photograph well AND are very comfortable!

Coordinating Outfits for Parents

For parents, coordinating your outfits is the key to achieving a cohesive look. Solid colors and subtle patterns work best, with soft neutrals like creams, grays, and pastels creating a timeless and elegant vibe. Avoiding busy patterns or logos ensures that the focus remains on the love and connection between you and your baby.

Simple and Sweet for Your Little One

As for your little one, simplicity is key. My favorite clothing items for newborns include:

1. A simple swaddle. I have lots of these in my studio to choose from.
2. Just a diaper. I have diaper covers on hand in my studio. This option allows us to highlight your babies sweet skin details!
3. A simple onesie in either white OR coordinating colors to your own outfits.
   All three of these options avoid bulky clothing or accessories that may distract from your baby’s natural beauty. Newborn clothing is often still a little too big for babies and typically moves around in awkward ways that covers your little one’s face.
   Don’t worry about bringing multiple outfit changes – capturing your baby’s innocence in whatever they feel comfortable in is the goal.
   However, if you have an heirloom outfit you’d like to have your baby photographed it, we can always do a few photos in sentimental pieces.
