This session is a couple years old – but somehow I skipped over sharing it and it deserves to be highlighted! The Freeman Family had delightful outdoor family photos taken on their family farm, just outside Nashville, Tennessee, and it was truly a pleasure to document these family memories in the enchanting golden hour light.
The session began with some warm-up exercises to make sure everyone felt comfortable in front of the camera, including playing games and telling stories. I love creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere during family photo sessions to capture candid and authentic moments. Warm up time at the beginning of our time together really helps with this – for adults & children alike!
During the shoot, we took some traditional posed family portraits and then moved on to more candid photos. We had a lot of fun, and the girls enjoyed playing and exploring in the field, which resulted in some delightful and spontaneous moments that made the photos even more special.
When it comes to outdoor photo sessions, golden hour is the best time to take photos. This time of day, which is the hour before sunset, offers beautiful, soft, and warm lighting that creates a natural and romantic glow in photos. Depending on the height of hills, trees, and/or buildings – sometimes the sun sets behind these “obstacles” sooner than the last hour, meaning our “golden hour” might begin a little earlier – I always take this into account when choosing each sessions’ start time.
If you like the look of the locations used for these outdoor family photos, but don’t have access to your own family farm – don’t fret – I can suggest locations with a similar feel & lighting!
