I feel like many parents worry, sometimes, about newborn sessions with siblings, but let me tell you… there is nothing to worry about! Welcoming a new baby into a family with other little ones can take some time to adjust. However, that shouldn’t hold you back from booking your newborn session. I think that one of the most important things families can do prior to coming in to their session is to prepare. Here are a few simple things you can do:
Get your little ones excited about the photo session! Talk to them about what’s going to happen. I feel like many love seeing photos of themselves! So, try and show them these and tell them how much fun this session is going to be!
Bring some fun treats/snacks for your kids to enjoy (nothing too messy though). Think cheerios, fruit snacks…
Bring someone to help! If your immediate family will be taking part in this newborn session, your partner could play around with your older child while we get all the solo newborn baby shots. Taking turns and giving your kids breaks in between greatly helps the process.
“Bribery”… to an extent. You could let your little ones know that after they get their photos taken they’ll get a treat. You could treat them to some ice cream or watching their favorite movie together once you get home. This simple little act will give kids something more to look forward to after the session!
I’ve been photographing families and newborns for some time now, so there’s no need to worry. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve for these newborn sessions with siblings! As a reminder, my goals as a photographer isn’t to just capture those picture perfect moments but rather raw moments that are just as cherish-able for your family!
