One of my phrases for 2020 is “start before you are ready.” For a long time, I’ve been itching to try something new in the studio. But I hadn’t told anyone about my idea because I didn’t feel “ready” … mostly because I didn’t have a backdrop, and most of my ideas centered around that.
And let me pause to say — I love my simple gray wall in the studio, and my white & black backdrop options that you’re used to seeing. I will always love and incorporate those into my work! But as a creative person, I needed to try something new that still reflected my natural, people-focused style. Okay, now back to starting before you are ready!
When I talked to Andi about my ideas, I was thrilled that she was willing to try them during her maternity session! Her home has white walls with colorful decor — so the pinks & yellows in my new backdrops will compliment her home perfectly! You can see more of her home decor style on instagram @luckyandi.
Now that I had someone open to trying my modern pastel maternity photo idea, it was time to find a backdrop….I looked into renting or buying, but I couldn’t find the exact colors & textures I had imagined. So off to home depot I went to get paint & brushes!
I was an art major in college with a focus in painting, so I was secretly excited to get to play with paint again for the first time in years! I had so much fun making these — there was definitely some trial & error, but I’ve learned and hope to make a few more colors this spring! Once the backdrops were ready, I brought in some Pampas grass and experimented with making “dried flower tattoos” which I had seen a long time ago on Pinterest. Andi had shared with me that they are plant lovers & even have a greenhouse — so this was a fun way to incorporate some plant life into her photos in a new way!
As your Nashville maternity photographer, I have always offered lifestyle, outdoor, and in-studio sessions, and now I’m excited to add these textured pastel backdrops to my studio collection!
